[ YOUTH BAND POLICIES ]
First and foremost, the Youth Band exists to uplift what takes place in the Mass. For that to happen, there are three main criteria to be met by each member (not in any particular order): 1- musical talent; 2- maturity and chemistry with the group; 3- understanding of and reverence during the Mass. The Youth Band is composed of two components: a core group of seasoned instrumentalists and singers and a youth chorus. Because the highest duty of liturgical music is to uplift the Mass, quality is the main priority.
Membership of the core group is by invitation only and entails a high level of talent and commitment, as well as mature musicianship and integration with the other members. In addition to individual qualities, group size has a large impact on the overall sound. Because a tight, polished sound is a result of a well-coordinated group, this group must remain small and regular. If you feel you have a talent that should be considered, please talk to Michael Raia, the music director, to discuss the possibility of your intermittent inclusion in the group as a guest or possible addition to the substitutes list. There are also opportunities to play for retreats and other special events.Membership in the youth chorus is open to all high school students (grades 9-12), male and female. This is the place for youth with a talent and passion for song to get involved in the liturgy in this special way. A simple audition is required. Please contact Michael Raia, the music director, via the contact page or talk to him after Mass.
We regret that we are not able to include everyone who enjoys music. However, we need energetic and spirit-filled worshipers filling the pews! We can also offer a number of other terrific ways to get involved in the Mass - as a Eucharistic minister, Lector, Mass coordinator, usher/greeter, or altar server. If you are still looking for an outlet for music talent, Emmaus has the blessing of having other Sunday Masses in need of musicians. Please contact the church office for more information on those opportunities.
